Hostel Wi-Fi Not Working: Student Checklist

Check the portal, device registration, private MAC address and service status in the right order.

Hostel Wi-Fi can fail at several stages. Start by deciding whether the device cannot join the network, joins without internet or works only on some websites.

Check the network and signal

Confirm the official SSID and move close enough to an access point for testing. A lookalike hotspot or weak signal can hide the real problem.

Check the current Wi-Fi address

Compare the device address shown for the hostel network with the value registered in the portal. Private or randomized address settings can create a mismatch.

Open the captive portal

Turn off mobile data and VPN temporarily, stay connected to Wi-Fi and open the official login page or a plain HTTP test page supplied by IT.

Collect useful evidence

  • Device and operating system
  • Network name and room or building
  • Current Wi-Fi MAC address
  • Time and exact error
  • Whether another device works in the same place
