Android TV Captive Portal on College Wi-Fi

A safe route for Android TV devices that cannot complete a college captive portal.

Android TV devices may join an ordinary home network but fail on college Wi-Fi because the television interface cannot complete the browser portal or enterprise sign-in flow.

Identify the network type

Ask whether the college offers a separate network for consoles, televisions and other browserless devices. This is common on managed networks and is safer than trying improvised workarounds.

Find the Android TV MAC address

The usual path is Settings → Network & Internet, then the active connection or device status. Menu names vary by manufacturer. Record the Wi-Fi address, not Bluetooth or Ethernet, when you plan to connect wirelessly.

Submit an authorised registration

  1. Open the campus device portal on a laptop or phone.
  2. Add the TV’s Wi-Fi MAC address under your own account.
  3. Choose the supported device network on the TV.
  4. Restart the TV after the registration becomes active.

If it still fails

Send the TV model, operating-system version, MAC address and exact error to campus IT. The network may require 802.1X fields that the TV does not expose, or it may intentionally disallow entertainment devices.

Security note

Do not enter college credentials into unknown third-party portal apps. Use the official network interface and the process provided by your institution.
