Windows Random Hardware Address on College Wi-Fi

Fix a mismatch between the Windows address and a college Wi-Fi device record.

Windows can use random hardware addresses while scanning for and connecting to Wi-Fi. If your institution registers one MAC address per device, the address in its portal must match the one Windows uses for that network.

Use the per-network control

Open Settings → Network & internet → Wi-Fi → Manage known networks, choose the campus network and inspect the random hardware address setting. Prefer the network-specific control instead of changing the behaviour of every saved network.

Compare before changing anything

  1. Record the address currently shown for the campus Wi-Fi profile.
  2. Check the address stored in the institution’s registration portal.
  3. If they differ, ask IT which address should be retained.
  4. After an approved update, forget and reconnect to the network if instructed.

What this does not solve

A stable MAC address will not open blocked ports, change a strict NAT policy or authenticate an unsupported device. It only prevents an address mismatch.
